These huge, heavy five volumes totalling 2435 pages of the The Second Great War published from the mid-1940s on by Waverley Book Company, London, was my staple growing up as a post-war child.

The local library in my Taranaki hometown has the full set of the nine-part series and I looked through them almost constantly over several years, enthralled by the many hundreds of action photographs in each volume.

I came across these five volumes in recent years and hope someone else can now appreciate them as much as I have.

They are each 22x28cm with cloth hard covers edited by Sir John Hammerton, and Major-General Sir Charles Gwynn, KCB, CMG, DSO, the military editior.

Every volume has hundreds of photographs, plus maps and plans, and a series of colour plates.

There is also a diary and notes on historic documents.

The series, subtitled A Standard History, was published in association with Amalgamated Press Ltd, London.

Volume 5: Pages 1637-2096, covering 1941 to early 1942 (459 pages).

Volume 6: Pages 2097-2588, covering 1942 (491 pages).

Volume 7: Pages 2589-3084, covering 1943 to early 1944 (495 pages).

Volume 8: Pages 3085-3576, covering 1944 (491 pages).

Volume 9: Pages 3577-4076, covering 1945 and up to the first assembly of the United Nations (499 pages).

There are some marks, stains and knocks to the hard covers and age spots on some pages but they are very quite sound otherwise.
