Description
After The Battle magazine is published quarterly, each issue contains 56 pages of text and on average 150 photographs with no advertising.
The preparation for the magazine takes place on the battlefields and stories are presented with maps and comparison 'then and now' photographs which add a new dimension to recent history.
THE LODZ GHETTO In the Polish city of Lodz – site of the second-largest ghetto in Poland – the part that comprised the Jewish quarters survives virtually unchanged, enabling us to perfectly match up many of the wartime photos taken there. The very first to be set up, Lodz ghetto was also the longest surviving of all those created by the Nazi regime. Over 43,000 people perished there and another 150,000 were sent away to be murdered by gas in the death camps. This sorrowful past can still be sensed as one walks the streets of the present-day city.
THE RACE FOR MESSINA Prime objective of the 1943 Allied campaign in Sicily was the port city of Messina, in the north-east corner of the island. In the final week of the battle both Montgomery’s British Eighth Army and Patton’s US Seventh Army were about equidistant from the city and, with the Americans eager to prove that they were as good a soldiers as the veteran British, the advance developed into a competition as to who would get there first.
PORT STEPHENS AMPHIBIOUS TRAINING CENTRE The Americans and Australians were busy practicing amphibious landing operations at a special joint training school, preparing their troops for the war against Japan. Every day, troops charged from landing ships and craft under realistic combat conditions to sharpen their skills and ease their baptism of fire.
