Description
After The Battle magazine is published quarterly, each issue contains 56 pages of text & ~150 photographs. The preparation for the magazine takes place on the battlefields and stories are presented with maps and comparison 'then and now' photographs which add a new dimension to recent history.
In our latest issue we mark the end of the war by describing the death of Kaiser Wilhelm II, the ruler of Prussia and of the German Empire, who was widely seen as the symbol of German aggression and the one responsible for the outbreak of the war. November 1918 (100 years ago this month) not only saw the end of the gruesome conflict and the signing of the armistice at Compiègne but also the abdication of Wilhelm II and his seeking exile in neutral Holland. For the next 23 years, the ex-Kaiser lived the quiet life of a country gentleman on a secluded estate in central Holland. However, by the time he died on June 4, 1941, having lived to the age of 82, the Netherlands had been invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany. Although Wilhelm had stipulated that he wanted a quiet funeral with no pomp and no Swastikas, his internment was a Nazi-orchestrated affair with a guard of honour, a military band and a huge wreath from the Führer. Our story, and its comparison photos, also detail the remarkable circumstances of the Kaiser's flight to Holland; how for a time in the early 1930s he hoped that the Nazis would put him back on the throne, and how in May 1940 he offended the Dutch, who had given him refuge all these years, by welcoming the German troops invading the Netherlands.
