Description
The Fellowship of The Ring (being the first part of The Lord of The Rings), by J.R.R Tolkien.
First Edition, Fifth Impression, 1956. George Allen and Unwin, London. Hardcover, minus Dust Jacket.
This is one out of a print run of 3000 which brought the total copies of The Fellowship to approximately 12,000. The first edition would eventually be printed 60,000 times over 15 impressions from 1954 - 1966.
- The original red cloth boards are heavily marked, and are worn about the edges. Somebody has, at one point, used the cover as a coaster.
-The spine is heavily worn and quite loose and is currently held secure with tape - though the book itself is still one unit, the boards being attached still to the main text. (The book does not fall apart when lifted etc)
- The inside page bears the name of a previous owner and is heavily spotted.
- The pages prior to the title page have come away from the title page, but are still attached to the front board (see photos).
- The main text itself is in great condition! The binding is strong and all pages are present and accounted for; they are clear, bright and perfectly readable. There is the odd stain / spot on a number of pages (see photos) and the edges have tanned, but nothing that affects the text.
Given the preservation of the main body of text, it could be rebound in a new cover, though the book is readable as-is.
Fine copies of this particular impression fetch a good price; this is not a fine copy. Please see the photos to get an idea of the superficial condition, so that you understand what you are purchasing.
An interesting part of the history of such a wonderful work, if nothing else. Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have.
