ABOUT The authors illustrated study of the 1970s alternative life communities in New Zealand and their resources, including the Jerusalem Community.
In the 1960s and early '70s alternative communities, or communes as they were more usually known, began to appear throughout New Zealand, as in other countries, although some were founded much earlier.
They were regarded with some suspicion by "conventional" Kiwis but where they exist today are seldom the cause for comment. For this study the author and the photographer visited a number of the communes and lived with the residents to assimilate and experience the life there. This is an important review of the early days of a lifestyle movement then considered radical by many.
