Description
The Elingamite and its Treasure Wade Doak
Hodder and Stoughton
1969 1st Edition / 1st Printing
Hardcover, 22.5x14.5cms, 192pp.
The story of the 1968 quest, by a group that included Doak himself and Kelly Tarlton, to rediscover the wreck of the Elingamite and recover its treasure.
The Elingamite was a passenger steamer that was wrecked, with the loss of forty-five lives, on one of the Three Kings Islands on a foggy November morning in 1902. Failed attempts had been made to salvage the treasure over the years, not without tragedies of their own. But Doak and Tarlton's party of divers found the ship, and recovered its treasure of gold and silver from the bottom of the sea.
This book tells the story of the tragedy and its victims, the new discoveries Doak's parties made about the Elingamite's loss, and of course the adventurous search for the wreck and the treasure.
