Description
PIRINOA - PEOPLE & PASTURE
by Anne Aburn
SIGNED inscription at bottom of title page - "Best wishes, Anne Aburn 17.4.87"
The fertile lower Wairarapa valley and coastline attracted early Maori and European settlers.
In the twelfth century, when the climate was warmer, itinerant Maori groups harvested the land and sea. By the time the European settlers tramped round Baring Head in the mid-nineteenth century to glimpse the verdant pastures of the lower valley Maori were well established.
The early European graziers negotiated leases with the Maori chiefs ahead of the Crown, bringing sheep and cattle tot he plains.
Small Farm Settlement never took hold in the district but the development of dairying on the rich lowland and the good grazing for sheep on the rolling hills and the wealth from the sea has seen the area grow.
"Pirinoa People and Pasture" recounts the district's history through the extensive research and writing of one of its own daughters, Anne Aburn.
Published by Roydhouse Publishing Ltd for Pirinoa School & District Centenary Committee in 1987.
Larger format hardcover (with dust jacket) - 177 pages
Some slight fading at spine edge of front cover - otherwise very good unmarked condition
