Description
"Passage to Tobruk" by Francis Jackson with eight b/w painting reproductions by war artist Peter McIntyre. First published in August 1943 with Raupo (a Reed imprint) this is a reprint dated October 1943. Card covers,143 pages, eight b/w paintings centrallly located. 3 internal pages have 2cms tears from lower corners and there is age discolouration to outer page edges and some internal foxing otherwise contents are all tight and clean. Probably one of the earliest published reminiscences of a New Zealand soldier from WWII, "Passage to Tobruk" follows the experiences of the author and his compatriot "Mac" through training, the voyage to the Middle East, into war in Greece, Crete, the North African campaigns up to the Battle of Sidi Rezegh where both were wounded. Battle sequences are interspersed with often humorous observations of out-of-action events, the dark side of war , courage and endeavour and the legendary Battle of the Berker in Cairo. As the author notes, this was his book but could have been the story of "every man who left these shores." In overall very good condition for age.
