The Leisure Hour A Family Journal of Instruction and Recreation

Fascinating journal - More than a century and a half old!

Published by the Religious Tract Society. The journal contained very little religious material; it instead delivered its moral mission through essays on wholesome recreations, and poetry, puzzles and illustrations, fictional stories and biographies of the virtuous and wise. Indeed, the Leisure Hour reflected and helped define the broader literary genres that were considered appropriate for achieving a serial with a moral tone.
