Description
Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile By James Bruce
The Scottish explorer James Bruce (1730-1794) introduced Ethiopia to the Western world and confirmed the source of the Blue Nile. He was the first modern explorer of tropical Africa.
Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile was first published in 1790. This is an abridged version published by the Edinburgh University Press in 1964. It was printed by T&A Constable, the same printers who published the 2nd edition in 1804.
A handsome half leather binding in near fine condition. Some slight sunning to the spine otherwise in faultless condition in all respects.
281 pages plus frontispiece, 50 illustrations, a fold-out map of Bruce’s travels and a fold-out genealogical table.
250mm x 180mm x 35mm.
The book bears the neat library stamp of Ricardo A. Caminos, a notable scholar of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and a longtime Brown University professor. He retired to London where he built a house next door to the Egypt Exploration Society with which he was associated for many years. After his death in 1992 much of his important library was donated to the Society by the Caminos family . This is a fascinating book with an interesting provenance in quite exceptional condition.
