Take your pick of these hardback novels by Charles Dickens. All are over 100 years old, and in good condition for their age (cover fading, discoloration, & edgewear; the usual foxing inside, but fully readable text)

1) 4 matching volumes from a lovely set produced by Walter Scott Publishing, Paternoster Square, London.

Red cloth hardbacks with gilded spine lettering and decoration, plus gilt edging to all three sides of the pages! So this must have been quite a luxury edition in its day.

None of them have publication dates. But I found a list of all the books Walter Scott published (https://pure.aber.ac.uk/portal/files/29389150/Turner_John_Vol2.pdf), so they can be dated:

a) Pickwick Papers 1884

• a few pages are loose & neighbouring pages are detached at the top

b) Hard Times 1898

• some loose & semi-detached pages, but none missing

c) David Copperfield published between 1892-1901

• binding damaged at front & back of book, but no pages missing; otherwise it's strong.

d) Bleak House 1913? (I'm dubious about this being accurate for my copy, due to the publisher's address details not matching up. The 1892-1901 range seems more likely)

• one small segment of pages is loose at the bottom but still attached at the top

2) 'Dombey & Son' undated, but published between 1879-1881 Published by Chapman & Hall and George Routledge, London.

This book was gifted to Queen's College, which was a private boys' school in Auckland, so there's a donor's name + library stamps. Gilt top edge to the pages, which are rough-cut at their other edges. Condition: binding is strong. Bottom cover corners are curled inward.
