Mana in Mahi: Supporting young people into work

Mana in Mahi is a new initiative to support Kiwi businesses and build a better future for young people.

This new initiative supported by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) gives young people the chance to earn while they learn and make them, their whānau and their community proud.

What is it?

Mana in Mahi supports young people to achieve a formal industry qualification including apprenticeships, and also helps businesses to grow.

It has the ability to change people’s lives and demonstrates the positive effect training and a job can have on a young person.

How does it work?

An experienced local team will work closely with you to understand your needs then match you up with young people (18–24) on a benefit. Support is provided through the recruitment and selection process, and the first year of employment.

What support could you receive?

  • Wage subsidies paid to you over one year
  • Funding to help you cover any pre-employment or on-the-job training costs.
  • Access to dedicated in-work support for you and your employee, and professional support if your employee has any specific needs.

Sounds good? Before you apply, check the Mana in Mahi requirements

You’ll need to:

  • Have a position you want to fill (or you’re thinking about a new position).
  • Commit to supporting a new employee towards a formal industry qualification.
  • Be able to pay at least the adult minimum wage.
  • Provide your employee with a written employment agreement.
  • Meet with MSD to discuss how the process is going.
