Looking for a reliable, stylish and affordable used car for under $20k? This buyer’s guide runs you through some of the best cars and SUVs to buy in this price bracket.  Whether you're after fuel efficiency for city commutes, enough space for weekend adventures or just a solid all-rounder, there's something here for every lifestyle. We've taken into account reliability, safety, running costs, and overall value to help you make the right choice. When searching for your next car, choose the newest vehicle your budget affords to get the latest features, especially where safety is concerned. With a mix of hatchbacks, SUVs, and a hybrid, you should find something from those listed to suit your needs.

Best EV

Nissan Leaf 2017 - 2022

The Nissan Leaf (2017–2022) is one of the best-value used electric vehicles (EVs) in New Zealand, offering low running costs, reliable performance and zero emissions. As a fully electric hatchback, it’s perfect for urban commuting and short trips, with later models offering increased range. The 40kWh version (introduced in 2018) is the most common in NZ and provides a real-world range of around 200–250km, while the 62kWh Leaf Plus (from 2019) extends that to around 350km, making it ideal for those needing more flexibility.

The Leaf is quiet, easy to drive, and well-equipped with features like e-Pedal for one-pedal driving, decent boot space, and solid safety features. NZ buyers often favour the Leaf X and G trims for their extra tech and comfort, while the Leaf S is more basic.

However, buyers should be cautious of battery degradation, especially in high-mileage imports or early 40kWh models without active cooling. It's essential to check the battery “State of Health” (SOH) using a tool like LeafSpy before purchasing. Also, ensure the car’s charging system is compatible with NZ infrastructure (CHAdeMO).

Overall, the 40kWh Leaf X or G from 2019–2021 offers the best mix of affordability, range, and reliability in the NZ used market.

Best hybrid

Toyota Corolla 2018 - 2022

The Toyota Corolla Hybrid (2018–2022) is a top choice for a reliable, efficient used car in New Zealand. It combines Toyota’s trusted hybrid technology with excellent fuel economy, averaging just 4.2L/100km, making it ideal for both city driving and longer trips. The hybrid powertrain seamlessly switches between petrol and electric modes, offering a smooth and quiet drive while reducing emissions and fuel costs.

This generation Corolla also boasts a modern, well-equipped interior, with safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking as standard on most models. Build quality is excellent, and Toyota’s reputation for durability means these cars tend to hold their value well over time.

Potential issues to watch for include higher-than-average prices due to strong demand and occasional complaints about the infotainment system being outdated in earlier models. Battery degradation is rare, but it’s still wise to check service records and ensure the hybrid battery has been well maintained.

The Corolla hybrid range gives buyers the choice of sedan, hatch and wagon with the hybrid powertrain. Imported models will have varying specifications, but lower spec grades can make for more affordable options.

Best family SUV

Nissan X-Trail 2013 - 2021

The Nissan X-Trail (2013–2021) is a practical used SUV choice in New Zealand, offering a great balance of comfort, space, and affordability. With flexible 5- or 7-seat configurations and a roomy boot, it's a good fit for families. The higher driving position and optional all-wheel drive give added confidence on NZ’s varied terrain.

Fuel economy is okay for its size, with the choice of 2.0L and 2.5L petrol engines, as well as front- and all-wheel drive. There is also a hybrid option too though avoid high mileage examples of this variant.

Interior quality is solid, with most models featuring Bluetooth, reverse cameras, and modern infotainment.

However, there are a few issues to be aware of. The CVT automatic transmission, especially in early models, has been known to cause trouble if not well-maintained — look for smooth gear changes and check service history. Some imported models may lack key safety features found in NZ-new variants.

The best pick for most buyers is the NZ-new ST-L or Ti models (post-2017), which include advanced safety tech like blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, plus a more modern cabin. They offer great value and peace of mind on New Zealand roads.

Best urban/small SUV

Suzuki Ignis 2016 - 2023

The Suzuki Ignis (2016–2023) is a great used car in New Zealand thanks to its quirky styling, compact size and surprising practicality. It’s ideal for urban drivers who want something small and economical, yet spacious enough for weekend adventures. With its high seating position, great visibility, and tight turning circle, the Ignis is easy to park and navigate through city streets.

Despite its compact footprint, the Ignis offers a roomy interior with sliding rear seats and clever storage solutions, although there is only room for four passengers in total. Fuel efficiency is excellent, with the 1.2L engine achieving around 4.7L/100km. Some models also come with Suzuki’s AllGrip all-wheel-drive system, adding extra confidence on gravel roads or in wintery conditions.

However, there are a few things to watch out for. Some earlier models can experience infotainment glitches, and while the build quality is generally good, rattles and squeaks may appear in higher mileage examples. Imported Japanese models may lack safety features like autonomous emergency braking or lane departure warning, which are more commonly found in NZ-new variants.

The best option for most Kiwi buyers is a post-2020 NZ-new GLX or LTD model. These come with updated safety tech, touchscreen infotainment, and improved interior finishes, making them a smart, reliable, and affordable choice for everyday driving.
