Best hatchbacks of 2024 and 2025
Here are four of the newest hatches on the New Zealand market, having been released in 2024.

The hatch is affordable, practical and the latest models are well specified, equipped with most of the common convenience and safety features. What’s also great about the hatchback segment is the variety of powertrain choice with pure electric, hybrids of all descriptions and good old ICE options. Here are four of the newest hatches on the New Zealand market, having been released in 2024.
Subaru Impreza - the AWD hatch
The sixth-generation Subaru Impreza is now only a single high-spec model, unlike previous generations that offered cheaper base versions. Priced at $44,990, it features a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated boxer engine, AWD and an eight-step CVT.
While packed with safety and convenience features, including Eyesight driver assistance, lane centring and a 360-degree camera, its 115kW and 196Nm output results in modest performance, with 0-100km/h taking over 10 seconds. However, it excels in handling, with strong braking and precise cornering aided by AWD. The cabin is well-built and comfortable, though some alerts, like speed camera warnings, can be intrusive.
Practicality is decent, with a 300L boot expanding to 883L. With few AWD hatches left, the Impreza remains a niche offering.
Suzuki Swift - the small hatch
The new Suzuki Swift line-up is simplified to just two variants, both powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder mild-hybrid engine. This 48V system aids low-rev performance, reduces emissions and improves fuel efficiency. However, it can't run purely on electric power. Prices start at $25,990 for the manual GLS, with the RSC CVT model offering additional features like heated seats, blind-spot monitoring, and 16-inch alloys.
While modest in power (60.9kW/111.8Nm), the lightweight (984kg) Swift is agile, smooth, and efficient with a real-world fuel consumption of around 5.4L/100km.
It excels in urban environments with light steering and good ride quality, though highway noise is noticeable. The cabin is simple but functional, though expect a lot of hard plastics. Safety features are improved, with speed sign recognition and adaptive cruise control, but the Swift scored a lowly one-star ANCAP rating recently. Overall, the Swift remains an affordable, economical, and fun-to-drive hatchback.
Volkswagen Golf GTI - the sporty hatch
The 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI receives its final refresh before the next-gen model, which will feature both electric and internal combustion options. The latest GTI now boasts 195kW and 370Nm, achieving 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds, an improvement from its predecessor’s 6.4 seconds.Key updates include a return to physical buttons on the steering wheel, improved infotainment, and subtle design tweaks. Inside, premium Vienna leather seats are available alongside classic tartan cloth. The adaptive suspension and electronic locking differential ensure impressive handling and comfort, with various drive modes for customization. Fuel efficiency sits around 7.4L/100km.Optional extras, including heated sports seats and an upgraded sound system, come in a $5K Touring package. Practicality remains strong with 381L of boot space and decent rear-seat comfort. While hatchbacks face declining popularity, the GTI remains a well-balanced, daily-drivable hot hatch that continues to impress with its refinement, performance, and enduring appeal.
Peugeot 208 - the premium hybrid hatch
Peugeot is taking a balanced approach to electrification, aiming to electrify all models by 2025 without committing solely to EVs. The facelifted 208 GT Hybrid features a 100kW turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system and an e-DCS6 dual-clutch gearbox, reducing fuel consumption to 4.7L/100km.This self-charging hybrid can run on electric power at low speeds and during steady-state cruising. It delivers a smooth drive, responsive performance, and a well-tuned ride, though steering could be more engaging. The refreshed design includes a bold grille, striking lighting elements, and unique wheel designs. Inside, Peugeot’s i-Cockpit offers a compact steering wheel and a 10-inch digital display. The high-end cabin features Alcantara seats, ambient lighting, and smartphone charging, though it lacks adaptive cruise control and sat-nav.Priced at $45,990, the 208 GT Hybrid is an appealing option for those seeking a stylish, premium small car with efficiency and refinement.
