Our most popular homes this year.
Last updated: 13 November 2024
An opulent Batman-themed penthouse, a rotating glass house, and a French chateau in Dairy Flat have been named in Trade Me’s most popular property listings of 2024.
Trade Me Property Customer Director Gavin Lloyd said “Every year we see some spectacular properties listed on site. It's the high-end and unique properties that get shared and talked about most, with these click-throughs adding up to tens of thousands of views to make our top properties list. This year’s list even includes a tent!”.
1. Iconic Metropolis Penthouse: The Dark Knight
This luxurious, high-end "man cave", racked up 148,441 views—the most of any property in 2024. Themed around Gotham City, it features a rotating Chevrolet Impala bed with the number plate "DIVORCE," hidden doors, hydraulic openings, and TVs in nearly every corner. Oh, and a stripper pole—for fitness, of course. The penthouse, located in Auckland's 155m-high Metropolis tower, has a $10m price tag, wall-to-wall marble, and arguably the best views in the city. The story behind getting the muscle car in place is just as epic—the owner reportedly had to hire a helicopter from Australia because no Kiwi chopper could lift the car. They even closed off surrounding streets as the helicopter flew over Albert Park to drop it onto the deck.

2. Castles in the Air
A quirky castle right smack in the middle of Half Moon Bay was an oddity that attracted 109,290 views. This medieval-themed property has been a holiday house for rent for the past ten years and is still up for grabs, either as a unique family home or an event space. 3. Give it a Spin
This rotating house in Maraetai, Manukau, brought in the rubberneckers with 109,080 curious viewers. Known as "The Lighthouse," the whole entire house rotates 360 degrees every 33 minutes, following the sun from room to room. With a spiral staircase and a short walk to the beach, it would make a fantastic novelty short-term rental. But with such a unique design, it still awaits the right buyer.

4. Come Fly with Me
While rich listers in Auckland want a helipad in the centre of town, true aviation enthusiasts go rural like at this Wellsford property, with its own airstrip and plane hangar. This property racked up 99,724 views. Sitting on 25 hectares off State Highway 1, Springhill Airfield features a 527 sqm family home and an 870-metre-long all-weather sealed runway. Why sit in traffic when you can fly?

5. A Slice of France Near Auckland
Chateau Pont-Noir, a French-inspired chateau in Dairy Flat, attracted 95,415 clicks for a nosey at its magnificence. This elegant six-hectare property near Waitoki features a Renaissance-inspired mural on the domed ceiling and two gargoyles brought directly from France and perched ominously on the roof adding some authentic mediaeval character. A true slice of France just outside Auckland.

6. The Good Life: Off-Grid Tent
An alternative lifestyle intrigued 91,492 Kiwis when they checked out a semi-permanent dome structure on the outskirts of New Plymouth. This insulated structure, along with sheds for cooking and ablutions, offers sustainable living in a peaceful setting. A converted truck body serves as an office, studio, or extra accommodation—making self-sufficiency a real possibility.
7. Luxury Remuera Mansion
It’s called "dream scrolling," and 81,620 Kiwi took the opportunity to peek into how the other quarter lives. This stunning property is close to the CBD for busy CEOs, and sitting proudly on the coveted northern slopes. Life is easy, breezy, and beautiful here. The home shares a floodlit tennis court with its own heated pool and a retractable roof sunshade, but it’s the three-car garage that would be the envy of every Westie.

Nearly 78,000 people clicked on this Provence-style cottage on Waiheke Island, drawn by its rustic charm. Built with mud bricks and repurposed materials, it offers sustainable living with an internal courtyard and views over the neighbouring vineyard. Just a 15-minute walk to the beach, you really could leave your old life at the Ferry terminal.

9. The Pink and Green House
Over 72,000 people explored this pink and green architect’s home in Wellington. Built in 1989, it features retro flair with a guest suite in the turret, a feather sculpture, and a sprawling four-level layout, including a massive downstairs area perfect for a rumpus room. The glass roof over the kitchen dining space brings plenty of light into this boomer dream home.

10. Pinnacle of Perfection
Now this is "dream scrolling," plus. This Remuera mansion captivated many of us. Nothing says you’re posh like a pool-sized water feature and lush foliage growing up the exterior walls. Marvel at the orderly Italianate garden and views down the valley to the harbour. You’ll hardly know you’re stuck in Auckland! Steeped in history the property originally had a billiards room and a ballroom, but has been thoroughly modernised with numerous bar areas, the gym and Pilates room, and the guest pavilion. Oh, how times have changed.
