Building product information rules and checklist
Find out about the new building product information rules and how to comply.
By Trust and Safety 3 November 2023Learn how to comply with the new building product information rules.
What are the new rules?
From 11 December 2023, new regulations take effect which require a minimum level of easy-to-understand information about building products to be made publicly available online.
You can check out the requirements in the checklist below.
Who do they apply to?
All manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, distributors, and retailers based in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The new rules aim to help provide consistent and high-quality information about building products, including how they comply with the Building Code, and how they should be used and installed.
If you're a builder tradesperson, designer, or consumer, you don't need to do anything. You'll have access to better information to choose the right products for your needs, install them correctly, and make informed choices about alternative products.
How do the rules impact listings on Trade Me?
Sellers must provide a link to the website where the product information can be found in their listing descriptions.
Aotearoa New Zealand-based wholesalers, distributors, and retailers will need to check that their products comply with the new minimum information requirements and that the information is available to their customers.
Check out MBIE's guide for more information.
Products covered by the regulations that don’t have the required information can't be sold onsite after 11 December 2023.
