Trade Me has a number of policies in place to protect our members, ensure smooth trading experiences, and represent our guiding values.

Nazi memorabilia is not permitted to be sold on the site and it falls under our ‘Offensive Memorabilia and Propaganda’ policy, which you can find in our banned and restricted list.

Why did Trade Me ban Nazi memorabilia?

The decision to prevent the sale of this kind of memorabilia was inspired by the voice of our community. This decision is a moral one and something we stand behind fully.

While it’s important that we don’t forget the past, Nazi memorabilia (especially items bearing Nazi insignia) are all too often used as a neo-Nazi symbol. This can have the effect of glorifying tragic past events.

This is something we don’t feel comfortable supporting.

It is important to note that one doesn’t have to be a certain, race, religion or have a certain cultural background to find something offensive.

Although you might not personally agree with this policy, many others in the Trade Me community do.

What if I cover up the insignia, can I list then?

Sorry, but no. Covering up any insignia or trying to hide what an item looks like, doesn’t make it OK.

Just like all of our other polices, hiding what an item is doesn’t change its nature and means it’ll still breach our policy.

What we do allow

We have a limited exception to our policy.

We allow the sale of items such as stamps, post cards, coins and historical reference books.

It’s also important to note that not all German medals or military items will be in breach of this policy.

The sale of First World War artefacts and listings that are described as being of German heritage or German militaria might be OK.

If in doubt, don’t list.

Other things we don’t think are cool

We want to be consistent and treat all offensive items equally.

Accordingly, Trade Me doesn’t allow the sale of things that promote or glorify racial, sexual, religious or other intolerance, hatred or violence, including materials that promote organisations with such views.

If you happen to come across a listing that you feel may breach our policy on Offensive Memorabilia and Propaganda, please use the Community Watch function located at the bottom of each listing.

That way it’ll come to the attention of our Trust and Safety team, who will check it out and take any action necessary.
