For the PL-514, Pioneer uses a high quality 4-pole synchronous motor and the signal—to-noise ratio achieved by the super-silent motor is 65dB and the wow and flutter is 0.055%.

The tonearm is a statically balanced s-shaped pipe arm with an effective length of 221mm…and like all good turntables features anti-skating, cueing device and adjustable counterweight.

Contributing to the overall low-error speed constancy of the PL-514 is its huge 320mm aluminium diecast platter and 40mm thick cabinet/plinth and insulator feet. It also features a detachable headshell, so that cartridges can easily be swapped.

One of the best features of this turntable is that it has an “auto – return” function, which if you’re lazy (like me), is a god send. When the needle reaches the end of the record, the tonearm will automatically lift, return to its stand and the machine will shut off. No more chance of ruining your stylus by forgetting to turn off the turntable!

It’s in perfect working order, and in good physical condition. I’ve also clad the plinth in real timber veneer to increase its vintage charm. There are a few marks on the dust cover, but it functions well. If you wanted a brand-new cover, you can get the custom made by Cambrian Plastics in Auckland for a good price.

The turntable comes with a copy of the user manual …..and with the Philips cartridge/stylus, it's fully ready to spin some vinyl!
