Description
I have had these cabinets for 15 plus years and finally got around to installing some 15" Tannoy drivers into them
I installed the 3833gg dual concentric 15 " driver which is basically the same as the driver used in Westminsters - it has the same horn but has a higher rated low frequency coil and cone.
It uses the original tannoy crossover and has a rolled rubber surround on the bass driver so no foam deterioration problems.
I use these same drivers in my GRF Corner horns from the 1950's and they have proven to be a great sounding driver
The cabinets are unusual and im not really sure what the specific design is, the only other one i have seen had a tannoy black 15" in it and was in Australia (any suggestions welcome on the design!) Both appear to be made from oak however one is stained more like a mahogany. Bothe cabinets are sound but need cosmetic refurbishment. They both have Wycombe style latice fronts with solid timber frames which are in very good condition - very 1950s...
I have measued my GRF and compared them to these in a corner and the cabinet volume is essentially the same albeit with a simpler horn shape that the grf. My grf measure 1040h minus the plinth x 600 width of front face x 720 deep - when you put these cabinets in the correct corner position they measure virtually identical 104 x 600 x 700 +/- as you can move them in and out of the corner to make the final mouth of the horn smaller or larger. So basically same cabinet volume.
Anyway they work very well either in a conventional position or in corners and preset a large effortless soundstage and can go pretty loud and with ease
Not sure what the efficiency is but suspect most modest valve amps would find them a pleasant load to drive
For sale to make some space...
Open to trades and welcome to audition via my trade listing
I also have a number of tannoy red red cone 15" - they are not going to be a bargain but they are for sale if anyones interested (listed elsewhere)
