Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament is Namco's first crack at a serious tennis simulation on PS2, built as a direct rival to the reigning champ of console tennis, Sega's Virtua Tennis series. It clearly wears that influence on its sleeve, but carves out its own identity with a greater emphasis on stamina management and precisely-timed shot contact rather than Virtua Tennis's more forgiving arcade feel.

Eight internationally renowned pros headline the roster, including Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Martina Hingis, and Anna Kournikova, competing across the sport's biggest stages - Wimbledon, the US Open, and other world-famous tournaments. Rather than simply holding a button to charge up power, timing your shot right as the ball meets the racket is what determines both accuracy and force, giving rallies a noticeably different, more deliberate feel than most tennis games of the era.

A dedicated Challenge mode lets you practise fundamentals - forehands, backhands, slices, lobs, and topspin - away from the pressure of a real match, easing newcomers into the more demanding timing system before throwing them into full tournament play. Quick pick-up matches sit alongside deeper tournament structures, giving the game flexibility for both casual sessions and longer play.

Reviewers at the time generally felt Virtua Tennis remained the stronger overall package, but with tennis titles genuinely scarce on PS2, Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament still offered a solid, credible alternative for the sport's fans. If you enjoy Virtua Tennis's arcade energy but want shot timing that actually punishes sloppy technique, this is well worth a shot - and it laid the groundwork for the notably improved sequel that followed.
