Ubisoft's 2008 open-world shooter, set in a fictional African warzone and notable for its ambitious, systemic approach — weapons jammed and degraded, fires spread realistically across dry grassland, and the whole map was open from the start with no invisible walls. It divided critics and players at the time (the malaria mechanic and constant respawning enemy checkpoints frustrated plenty of people), but it's been reassessed since as a genuinely bold, influential entry that pushed open-world design forward ahead of games like Far Cry 3 and even Breath of the Wild. A cult favourite rather than a mass-market hit.
