The young fronds are translucent & very light green in shade. These are the edible ones. The mature leaves are the darker green, have prominent veins & fingers. These are the non-edible leaves!

To Eat:~

Simply pick the young leaves at the stem & eat the whole frond of the fern. The taste is quite good. A taste which is light then becomes dense which signifies NZ native plants. Like eating lettuce ~ only different!

Perfect to add to salads for something unique & to add a touch of New Zealand!

The little brown “things” on the underside of the fern frond which you can see from the photo are called Sori ~ these are the fern’s spore capsules, not to be mistaken for aphids or other little critters!
