Brussels sprout is a true cold weather vegetable. Frost improves its flavour as starches are converted to sugars on freezing. Nice nutty flavour.

The red ribs are a heirloom variety growing to 80cm and produce an abundance of red coloured sprouts. They have excellent milder flavour than the green type. Has a long growing season up to 8 months. Colour is retained by steaming with minimal water or by microwaving.

Sow seeds in late summer to autumn (Jan-Mar) for cooler areas, or late spring (Dec-Feb) for warmer spots, aiming for a long, cool growing season (around 14-28 weeks total) before winter frost.

Adaptable to most good garden soils, prefers an open sunny position. For seedlings, sow in seed raising-mix trays & transplant when 6cm tall Once sprouts start appearing remove leaves from the lower part of the plant. Pick sprouts as they develop. Protect from aphids and caterpillars.
