Flax will grow to 2-3 metres tall with flower stalks up to 5 metres tall.

Flowers November to December. Flowers are very attractive to nectar eating birds (tui etc.) and insects as well as providing a valuable source of pollen to honey bees (as it has very high protein levels).

Grows in most conditions and sites from lowland swamps to dry hillsides. One of the more resilient native plants to adverse weather conditions once established. Unlike most native species, flax will eventually recover from accidental grazing.
