Description
Vintage Beswick lettuce & tomato deep serving dish c.1930-1950. 27cm long by 18cm across and 3.5cm deep.
This dish has been made of a pottery base which has been moulded in the shape of lettuce leaves and tomatoes. After firing, both the top and bottom of this dish has been coated in a light green glaze. The tomatoes have then been painted over in a vermillion glaze, with further brown highlights added to the stalks.
Very light crazing throughout, and one tiny chip on an underside rim. Slight staining on base (auction priced accordingly).
This dish was made by the Beswick factory of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, which operated from 1894 until 1969. The backstamp on the base of this piece indicates that it was made after 1936 but before 1960.
This is a fantastic item, and would look great in a collection of midcentury pottery, as well as in domestic use.
