At the peak of the boom in penny varieties in the late 1960s, thousands of collectors right around Australia were actively searching for every penny variety known to mankind - bulk lots of coins were checked many times over.
Although new varieties are regularly being discovered in the sovereign and half sovereign series, it's been pretty much gospel to collectors of Commonwealth coins that every known variety of penny had already been discovered - the trick was to simply find one of each of the known penny varieties, rather than look for new varieties.
So when the news was published in the CAB magazine in 2003 that a completely new penny variety had been discovered, it really did set the collector market back on its haunches.
Although it had long been known that there were no less than 7 different types of 1920 penny (each one different based on the reverse and obverse dies used to strike them), no one had ever come across a 1920 penny with a dot above the lower scroll on the reverse. Last two photos are for reference Coin age has now hit 106 years old!!!
