Impressive and genuine Polynesian tapa (ngatu) from Tonga, measuring approx. 2100mm x 1700mm. Still very vibrant. Features traditional kupesi motifs including stylised birds, animals, geometric and ceremonial patterns, with strong chevron borders. Handwritten numbering along the edge indicates traditional multi-sheet construction. Dating to approximately the mid-20th century (c. 1940s–50s). This is not a tourist piece but a large ceremonial ngatu. Condition is excellent for age. Some edge losses and irregular margins as expected, but interior panels are very well preserved with strong pigment and clarity. A powerful statement piece for display, cultural use, or collection.
