Description
Impressive and genuine Polynesian tapa (ngatu) from Tonga, measuring approx. 2100mm x 1700mm. Still very vibrant. Features traditional kupesi motifs including stylised birds, animals, geometric and ceremonial patterns, with strong chevron borders. Handwritten numbering along the edge indicates traditional multi-sheet construction. Dating to approximately the mid-20th century (c. 1940s–50s). This is not a tourist piece but a large ceremonial ngatu. Condition is excellent for age. Some edge losses and irregular margins as expected, but interior panels are very well preserved with strong pigment and clarity. A powerful statement piece for display, cultural use, or collection. Tapa of this size and authenticity are increasingly difficult to find. Please view all photos carefully as they form part of the description. Will carefully wrap and prepare for courier. Happy to answer questions.
