Description

Heavy old antique Stanley No 4 wood plane, the last patent date I can see by the brass adjusting screw is 1910. The thing you notice with these older planes are their weight compared to the lighter mid last century ones. I cannot see any major damage, no cracks in the wooden handles or on the metal ware, there is black paint coming away from the inside flat bits. The base is 22.7 cm ignoring the back handle section and 6 cm wide. Probably could do with a restore as there is some old paint on it in places etc. Please see all my pics.

  • Hello to you. Stanley change there locking cap to the kidney style like what's on your plane in 1933. jtrain (595) • 3:05 pm, Fri, 10 Apr Hi, many thanks for that, this must mean I would think that the locking cap is not original and it has been changed at some point in its life as I would think the actual plane would be alot older than 1933. Thanks heaps for the info. dazzaa54 (5374) • Friday, 10 April 2026
  • Hi yes the older planes are nice to use, if it's any use to you the lever cap does not seem to match the body, I brought an old plane earlier this year where the cap didn't match ? without having it in my hand to double check best guess is it is a series 12 made between 1919 and 1924, but possibly could be earlier. That was the first year that had a sweetheart SW stamped on the top of the blade/Iron, but that could have been worn out and changed at some stage jughead1 (469) • 2:07 pm, Sat, 11 Apr Hi, thanks heaps for this information. The main thing is that people bidding know what they are buying. dazzaa54 (5374) • Saturday, 11 April 2026
