Sculpture : “Rescue our Memory”
By Des Smith
Dimensions: 1700mm x 180mm x 150mm (heavy)
This sculpture, titled Rescue our Memory, is carved from a 100-year-old New Zealand native Totara Fence Post, reclaimed from a farm in the central North Island. The timber, once part of our farming heritage, now stands as a monument to the forest it came from — a silent witness to the loss of ancient trees that once thrived across Aotearoa.
The central crevice wedge, symbolizes the wound inflicted when these majestic natives were cut down, a scar. A reminder of the sadness and reverence owed to the land and its original guardians and one struggles to rescue and restore a giant of our land.
Mounted on a base of wood and concrete, the sculpture bridges natural legacy and modern consequence, inviting viewers to reflect on the cost of progress and the power of remembrance.
