Feather Legacies of Aotearoa – Kea Feather (Reclaimed Totara)
Great gift for Christmas. Wrapped in black tissue ready to gift.
Dimensions: 500mm x 70mm x 55mm
This unique wall sculpture represents the feather of the Kea, Aotearoa’s famously curious and intelligent alpine parrot. Crafted from New Zealand native reclaimed totara, the wood once served as farm fence battens for more than 120 years. Sourced from a historic property in the Central North Island, the timber carries the marks, textures, and stories of generations lived on the land.
Hand-carved by artist Des Smith, the sculpture blends the graceful form of a Kea feather with the rugged authenticity of its origins. The smooth, refined carving contrasts with the naturally weathered totara, honouring both the craftsmanship involved and the long life of the material itself.
Part of the “Feather Legacies of Aotearoa” series, this artwork not only celebrates native birdlife but also acknowledges the deep farming heritage of New Zealand—a tribute to the people, landscapes, and traditions that shaped the nation. Through reclaimed materials and thoughtful design, the sculpture stands as a connection between land, bird, craft, and history.
