TOM ESPLIN "OTAGO UNIVERSITY" PENCIL DRAWING 1966 - SIGNED LOWER RIGHT
"Tom Esplin (1915–2005) was a renowned Scottish-born, Dunedin-based landscape painter famous for his vibrant, heavily textured impasto technique using a palette knife. Tom Esplins artistic career started at the early age of 10, when he was awarded first prize for a sketch of his father. At age 18, he won a scholarship from the Edinburgh College of Arts, where his art master commented that Esplin was one of the best pupils he had had presented for some years and he predicted a brilliant career for the lad. After his duty serving in the war, he took up a teaching exchange in Dunedin. He and his family decided to emigrate to New Zealand and began a lecturing position at Otago University for the next 25 or 30 years, serving as Senior lecturer in design from 1955-1978 and then Associate Professor until his reirement in 1985. He then became a full time artist and developed his trademark style, travelling extensively with his wife Edith (also a painter and writer) to inspire his distinctive, colourful works."
