Description
An original signed 1958 watercolour and pastel by John Elson(1898-1959). The scene features an early NZ home; located on a corner, it is fenced off, but has a fine open view to houses beyond and with a willow tree across the road. There appears to be a faint pencil cross shape in the sky and whether this is symbolic or part of the creative process, I'm unsure.
The artist has signed and dated in the bottom right corner and at the back is a Wally Ireland, Picture Framer, Napier label.
Ronald John Elson, known as John, was born in the UK in 1898 and married Helen Turton in 1940. By 1949 they are resident in Napier and John is recorded in electoral rolls as "Art Master". As to his art background and training in the UK before emigrating to NZ, I'm unaware.
The visible painting measures 39cm by 28cm(the frame 54cm by 44cm), it's protected behind glass and ready to hang. Regarding condition, there is a small spot on the mount surround at top left and the frame has minor marks appropriate to age and handling. The artwork itself is in good condition.
