DESCRIPTION: Sometimes I create art for beauty, other times I make pieces with meaning. This work falls into both categories. The father and son are compositionally beautiful yet filled with a quiet grief. The use of the word Pietà does not mean pity in this context, it relates to compassion - something that we need more of. And although this work isn't a religious pietà, the metal leaf harks back to the genre, symbolising the precious element of the setting along with the people. Additionally, the orange leaf (the stretcher) and its gold counterpart (the cardboard) accentuates the triangular composition of the pietà, framing father and son, while the red leaf represents blood. The same red has also been used in the clothing, coupled with blue, which shimmers from different angles. Lastly, aluminium foil lays hidden in the wall (behind the man), giving texture to the acrylic.
MEDIUM: Mixed Media - Acrylic Paint, Metal Leaf, Aluminum Foil and Iridescent Medium. 2 layers of GAC-100 was used to protect the metal leaf, while clear gesso was added to tone it down, also giving a suitable base for the following layers of acrylic paint.
SIZE in inches: 24 Height x 36 Length x 1.5 Depth.
