The "Yellow Church" Gallery in Mangaweka is home to the "Walkshorts and Socks Revival.

NZ Walk Shorts & Walk Socks are smart, stylish, men's garments that were highly popular from the 1950s to the 1980's/90's. Walk Shorts typically come in neatly pressed polyester, sitting above the knee, combined with pulled-up knee-high socks, being worn with leather shoes or sandals. In the 1950s, the NZ Public Service Union petitioned the State Services Commission to allow their office workers to wear Shorts in summer… Eventually permitted, but only in ‘white, grey or fawn’ – this was later relaxed to allow for the more varied, fun & colourful patterns of the time....

The full colour print on offer here shows the popular Beige & Brown colour combination of formal 'Walk Shorts and Walk Socks' with Shirt & Tie, modelled by Mangaweka ‘Yellow Church’ Art Gallery apprentice Michael Cathels (left) and owner/artist and musician Richard Aslett (right). They have appeared in the NZ Today magazine, live on Radio NZ and also on the old "Project" TV3 program!!

This once prevalent NZ look saw a gradual decline as a more un-kempt, casual appearance, swept the nation. Though now not so often worn in combo, Walk Short & Socks are still considered a major iconic item of NZ 'Kiwiana' - indeed with the onset of Global Warming many office workers are again clamoring and calling for their hasty comeback!
