JOSEPH MALLORD WILLIAM TURNER (1775 – 1851) RA, known in his time as WILLIAM TURNER, was a Famous British Romantic Landscape Painter, Printmaker and Watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colouring, imaginative landscapes and turbulent marine paintings.
CHARLES HENRY JEENS (1827–1879) was a British engraver, known for producing high-quality steel-engraved portraits and vignettes. The "sculpt" notation, from the Latin sculpsit, indicates he engraved the print rather than sculpted in stone, creating detailed portraits, etc.
Comment: When an engraver's name (JEENS) is on a work alongside an artist's (TURNER), it means Jeens created a print (engraving) of Turner's original painting. Engraving involves carving the image onto a plate, which is then used to produce prints. Jeens' role was to translate Turner's artwork into a reproducible format.
