First Edition published in 1915 board covered in yellow cloth illustrated in green front and spine. Considered to be the best of the First World War fundraising books. This is a charming children’s picture and story book written and illustrated by the famed French British illustrator and painter Edmund Dulac with 19 coloured plates tipped onto board and his facsimile signed portrait towards the end. Published on behalf of the ‘Croix Rouge Francaise’ Comite De Londres London. No Dust Jacket. Book is in excellent condition, clean and binding tight. End papers replaced in 2007 by Hilary Gorringe.
Dulac is best known for his book illustrations for classic writers like the Bronte Sisters, deluxe illustrated children’s/gift books, magazine illustrations and designs for bank notes and postage stamps on to Elizabeth’s reign. His lavishly published and illustrated gift books include: Stories from The Arabian Nights (1907) with 50 colour images; an edition of William Shakespeare's The Tempest (1908) with 40 colour illustrations; The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1909) with 20 colour images; The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales (1910); Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (1911); The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe (1912). The best of these books in good condition generally fetch over $1k these days.
