This early edition of “Complete Manual of Maori Grammar and Conversation with Vocabulary” was edited by Sir Apirana Ngata and published by Whitcombe & Tombs. The work expanded upon the earlier Maori language manuals associated with Mother Mary Aubert and became one of the better-known instructional Maori language texts of the early twentieth century. This example carries a handwritten Rotorua 1912 ownership inscription and contains 166 pages.

The book reflects an important period in the preservation and teaching of te reo Maori during the early twentieth century. Apirana Ngata was one of New Zealand’s most influential Maori leaders, scholars and language advocates, and publications connected with his educational work remain collectable today. Condition: Heavy age wear throughout with rubbing, marks, creasing and edge wear to covers. Spine worn and fragile. Foxing, age toning and handling wear present internally.
