Full title: " L'Égypte et la Syrie, ou moeurs, usages, costumes et monumens des Égyptiens, des Arabes et des Syriens. Précédé d'un Précis historique." Well worn Morocco, blindstamped and giltstamped, spine gilt, leading edges and inner dentelle gilt, faded. Accompanied by notes by Jean Joseph Marcel (1776-1854), director of the French imperial printshop at Cairo.
Vol VI: 272 pages, 10 steel engraved hand-coloured plates, depicting costumes, crafts and landscapes. For this work on Egypt and Syria, Breton de la Martinière enlisted the help of Jean-Joseph Marcel, who had been among the scholars who accompanied Napoleon during his campaign in Egypt in 1798. He supplied Breton de la Martinière not only with information but also with drawings he had made himself in the course of this visit to the east and which Breton de la Martinière added to those of Luigi Mayer published in England over ten years earlier.
