The Nain rug design originated in a city in Iran that is close to the western edge of the great desert Dasht-e-Kavir. Known for their quality rugs, weaving rugs, a fine art, began in Nain about the time of World War II. Because carpet weavers from Nain worked with thinner wools, they began to weave rugs of much higher quality. Patterns with a medallion in the middle together with arabesques and floral motifs are common. Nain designs are now made outside of this area.
