Heirloom SEEDS Botanical Name : Claytonia perfoliata
A small, herbaceous, slightly succulent, pretty & nutritious plant. aka, "Claytonia", "Winter Purslane" & "Indian Lettuce".
Can grow up to 30 cm tall but is normally smaller. Leaves are of three types, usually bright green, sometimes streaked with white & occasionally reddish.
A hardy annual with pretty looking heart shaped leaves. Crispy, wild fresh taste. Leaves, stalks & flowers can be harvested fresh & used in salads or can be boiled & eaten like spinach.
Grows ALL YEAR round in cool positions in dappled sunlight. The best time to grow is during the cooler months of LATE AUTUMN TO EARLY SPRING, MARCH, APRIL & AUG-SEPT. Continues to grow throughout winter. Grows well under trees. Loves sandy, well drained positions & tolerates poor soil & cold winters. Can be used as a ground cover too. The leaves are ready for consumption from late autumn/early winter.
It is a self-seeding plant. Germination occurs rapidly, only 6-8 days. It can be successively seeded for a continuous rotation of this edible green.
Unlike many greens, Claytonia retains its flavour even when the plant is in bloom, however, it will become bitter when the weather becomes hot.
