Description

Calling all serious Royal Doulton and British porcelain connoisseurs. Up for auction is a museum-grade Prestige Series figurine of King Charles I, standing at an impressive 42cm (16.5 inches). This is the elusive "Large Version," far superior in presence and rarity compared to the standard smaller models. Provenance & Authenticity: This piece is a time capsule from the golden era of the Burslem studio. It features a complete set of "holy grail" markings for collectors:

  • The "Potted by" Mark: Hand-written "Potted by Doulton & Co" under the base, indicating this was a hand-crafted, studio-made piece rather than a mass-produced item.
  • Artist’s Signature: Hand-signed by the legendary artist Harry Tittensor directly onto the base.
  • Impressed Date Code: The number 274 is deeply impressed into the ceramic body, pinpointing the manufacture date to April 1927. It is exactly 99 years old.
  • Official Backstamp: Features the crisp Royal Doulton Lion & Crown mark (post-1922 version). Design & Finish: The figurine is finished in the celebrated Ebony Glaze. The black finish is deep, lustrous, and reflects light beautifully, showcasing the intricate sculptural details Tittensor is famous for. Condition Report:
  • Body: Exceptional condition for its age. No cracks or chips to the main porcelain body.
  • The Walking Stick: A point of historical interest. The original ceramic stick has been replaced with a period-correct Horn or early Celluloid rod featuring natural grain/fibers.
  • Historical Repair: The stick is secured with an old organic resin/glue which has aged to a distinctive brown hue. This is an "honest" vintage restoration that has been with the piece for decades, preserving its majestic silhouette. Why bid on this piece? At 42cm, this is a statement piece. Finding a "Potted by" Tittensor-signed Charles I in this size, with a verified 1927 date code, is an opportunity that rarely surfaces on TradeMe. It is a solid investment piece that will only appreciate as it hits its 100th anniversary next year.
