Description
In 1976 NZ lost a cricketing giant Ken Wadsworth, at just 29 years old he was a fiercely committed wicketkeeper & aggressive batsman. His daughter Jayna is transforming his enduring legacy into a lifeline for young kiwis struggling with mental health challenges.
Her initiative is a heartfelt tribute to her father's courage & a call to action for NZ's youth. She is auctioning this unique exhibit featuring the signatures of NZ Test wicketkeepers since Ken's death, a powerful symbol of continuity and resilience. The funds raised will support the grassroots charity I Am Hope lead by Mike King, that provides free counselling to all kiwis 25 & under and fosters conversation and social change around mental health.
Ken was a cricketing force, playing 33 consecutive test matches, dismissing 96 batsmen & scoring over a 1000 runs. His record breaking 220 run sixth wicket partnership with Glenn Turner against West Indies in 1972 set him apart & his passion shone the brightest at Lancaster Park where he scored the winning runs in NZs first ever test victory over Australia in 1974 & became the first wicket keeper to score an ODI century.
Ken's early death was a profound loss to not only the cricketing world but also Jayna & her mother. In Jayna's own words: "In August 1976 after Dad's passing, Dick Brittenden facilitated the Ken Wadsworth Testimonial Fund with the goal to raise funds to help support Mum & myself. The kindness of people who donated, kids who loved watching Dad giving up their pocket money, sports teams raising funds, everyday people giving to a wee girl who lost her Dad... it was amazing, later in life, reading about all the donations from people. Now I want to give back - like the people who gave so generously to me".
