In 1989, the first-generation Subaru Legacy took on the 100,000km FIA World Land Endurance Record outside of Phoenix, Arizona. The high-performance Legacy broke the world record by maintaining an average speed of 223.345 km/h (138.78 mph) thus completing 100,000 km in 447 hours, 44 minutes, and 9.887 seconds.

This event and the new Legacy launched Fuji Heavy Industries Subaru mainstream and Subaru found the RS was extremely popular as a base for motorsport. The RS-RA was launched as a lightweight, stripped out version, and most have been converted for racing or lost over time, making this particular car a rare bird indeed.

Particular attention was paid to every aspect of the vehicle from engine internals to suspension, gearbox to steering rack and nothing was left in the car that did not need to be there - lightweight, durable and functional was the end goal.
