Welcome to Mount Albert

Mount Albert, Auckland

Mount Albert is a welcoming suburb that offers a strong sense of community and excellent educational options. The area is home to Mount Albert Grammar School, one of Auckland’s leading secondary schools, making it a major draw for families. Several primary schools also serve the suburb, including Gladstone Primary and Marist School. Commuting to the CBD is seamless, with the suburb well-connected by both train and bus. Mount Albert is characterised by its charming bungalows and spacious parks, and you’re never far from a delicious eatery. The area features Oakley Creek Reserve, home to Auckland’s only urban waterfall, a large Westfield shopping centre, and Chamberlain Park Public Golf Course. Of course, there’s Mount Albert itself, the extinct volcano from which the area gets its name. A 20-minute climb rewards you with expansive views across the city and out to the Waitakere Ranges.

Life in Mount Albert

Mount Albert was one of the earliest Auckland suburbs to be settled by Europeans, and the area is rich in history – evidenced in part by the colonial era villas you’ll still find nestled among more modern builds. Located 7 km from the modern CBD, Mount Albert is dominated by the extinct volcano from which it takes its name. Climbing Ōwairaka, as the maunga is called in te reo, is one of the many delights afforded to Mt. Albertians. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with expansive views out to the Waitākere Ranges and beyond.

However, this is far from all that Mount Albert has to offer. Other highlights include:

  • Oakley Creek Reserve: as the only waterfall within Auckland's city limits, Oakley Creek is a favoured picnic spot for families, especially for those who have kids with energy to burn.
  • Westfield St. Lukes: shoppers will also love calling Mt. Albert. As well as smaller, boutique shops on the New North Road, Westfield St. Lukes offers a huge array of larger stores and cafes.
  • Chamberlain Park Golf Course: for those looking to get a round in on the weekend, Chamberlain Park Golf Course means that you won’t have to travel far for your golfing fix.

Transport

There are a number of options for Mount Albertians looking for easy routes to the CBD and other suburbs. The suburb boasts not one, but two train stations – Mount Albert Station and Baldwin Station. Both lie on the Western line route and provide straightforward access to hubs, including the CBD and Newmarket.

Once completed, the City Rail Link (CRL) will widen the number of destinations you can reach from Mt. Albert station, and decrease travel times to key destinations like Britomart. This is likely to make Mount Albert an even more desirable location, and improve trading for local businesses. These trains are complemented by a range of bus services in the suburb, including the 22N, 22R, 66 and OUT.

On top of this, five minutes in the car and you’re in Grey Lynn, Kingsland, or Pt. Chevalier for the beach.
