Built on the original track along the Waimak river from ChCh in 1864 and then known as "Whites Hotel”. This significant piece of Canterbury history provided accommodation and refreshments to countless settlers aiming to establish farms and communities on the plains, the foothills and beyond the Alps and to endless numbers seeking their fortune in the goldfields of the Westcoast. The liquor license was transferred to premises in the new township of Kirwee in the late 1870’s and the hotel building became the family homestead and remained with the White family as they continued to farm the land. 1900 saw new ownership of the property. At least 2 generations of this family cherished the homestead as they grew up with a real connection of the early days of Colonial Canterbury. New owners emerged in 1994 following its subdivision from the original farm. Being keen heritage enthusiasts their intention was to undertake a complete restoration of the building. This project was complex and handled with passion and respect for the building and was reflected by being the winner of the Heritage Restoration Category of the Canterbury Heritage Awards in 2012. The property was sold to the current residents in 2014 who then completed the interior fitout. Here now is an opportunity for new owners to retain “Whites” as a genuine character home or perhaps to open the doors to commercial pursuits inline with its beginnings in 1864.
