Prumnopitys taxifolia, the matai (Maori: matai) or black pine, is an endemic New Zealand coniferous tree that grows on the North Island and South Island. It also occurs on Stewart Island/Rakiura but is uncommon there.

Matai is graded into two distinctions - Heartwood and Sapwood. Heartwood is a beautiful warm brown with the occasional reddish tinge and even colour, while sap wood is a yellow/brown and can be easily distinguished. Matai gives a beautiful silky finish when sanded and polished.

This beautiful timber would be ideal for craft ideas such as light shades, pitcher frames and so much more.

Matai has a long history of uses in NZ. Historically it was used for a wide variety of musical instruments, large cooking vessels, long hunting spears, handles for tools like toki (adzes) and for thwarts and bailers of waka (canoes).
