BYD Sealion 6
The BYD Sealion 6 Premium is a plug-in hybrid SUV priced at $64,990, offering all-wheel drive and increased power over the $57,990 front-wheel-drive Dynamic model. While both models share an 18.3kWh battery, the Premium features an extra rear motor, increasing total output to 238kW and 550Nm.The SUV primarily runs as an EV until the battery depletes to 25 per cent of charge, then switches to hybrid mode, using a 1.5L turbo engine to operate primarily as a generator to keep the battery charged. The Premium offers an 81km electric range but averaged 50km in testing, while fuel consumption hovered around the 7.5L/100km mode in hybrid mode.Inside, the Sealion 6 features premium materials, a large rotating touchscreen, and ample space, though its 425L boot is modest. Comfort is prioritised, with a soft ride, light steering, and muted safety warnings. Despite its higher power output, the Premium lacks a noticeable performance edge over the Dynamic. Given its $7,000 price premium, buyers may find the cheaper Dynamic model a better deal, as both offer strong value compared to HEV and PHEV competitors.

MG3 hybrid
The MG3 Hybrid+ is a city-friendly hybrid that offers a significant performance boost and improved fuel efficiency over its petrol-only counterpart for an additional $4,000. With a 1.5L Atkinson-cycle engine, an electric motor and a generator, it operates seamlessly in different hybrid modes without driver intervention. Around town, it often runs in EV mode, while on highways, it functions as a hybrid, delivering fuel consumption in the 5.0L/100km zone. The hybrid version is nearly twice as quick as the non-hybrid MG3, achieving 0-100km/h in around 7 seconds. It handles well though it lacks steering column reach adjustment and lumbar support for the driver. Tech features include a large touchscreen, though it can be unresponsive, and there are persistent overspeed warning chimes. The Essence trim ($31,990) adds LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, smart key entry, and a 360-degree camera, making it a worthwhile upgrade. While the cabin features hard plastics, the boot remains a decent 293L. The MG3 Hybrid+ offers better EV functionality than the Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Swift hybrids while remaining competitively priced. With a 10-year warranty, it’s a strong option for those prioritising urban fuel savings and peppy performance.
