According to our latest Secondhand Economy Report, every Kiwi has about $1,500 worth of unwanted stuff lying around.
With the most expensive time of the year just around the corner (we’re looking at you, Christmas), we’re challenging you to clear your cupboards and garages and see how close you can get to $1,500.
To make things even sweeter, we’ll put you in the draw to win $1,500 Ping credit, plus award a few spot prizes along the way.
How it works
Open up your cupboards and start decluttering. Find items you haven’t used in a while and prep them for their new home.
Create your listings on Trade Me. Take your photos in a well lit spot and add detailed descriptions.
Share your progress on Instagram, tag @trademe_nz and use the #DustToDollars hashtag, and you’ll go in the draw.

Almost 700,000 Kiwis a day visit Trade Me looking for all sorts of treasures.
Our Secondhand Economy Report found Kiwis have at least 18 unwanted items lying around they could clear for cash. Here’s a few of the most in-demand items and brands you might want to list:
- Houseplants and plant cuttings have been the big trend of 2020!
- With summer on its way, outdoor furniture, bbqs and tents are all trending
- Augustine, LuluLemon, Nike, Nature Baby, Jamie Kay, Karen Walker & Country Road are go-to labels onsite
- Gym gear and workout equipment has been having a moment onsite, so if you have any gathering dust it’d be worth listing them
