As the temperature drops, power bills often start to climb. But keeping your home warm and your bills in check doesn't have to be a massive mission. We've teamed up with our mates at Gen Less to share some simple ways you can save money and energy this winter.

Easy ways to shrink your bill

Making a few small changes around the house can add up to some pretty big savings. Here are a few things you can try:

  • Check your power plan. Are you on the best one for you? Use Powerswitch to check you’re still getting the best value for money - you could save up to $500 a year.
  • Switch off at the wall. Unused appliances can chew through power. Turning them off properly could save you up to $200 a year.
  • Heat the space you're in. Close doors, block pesky draughts and only heat the rooms you're using. This simple trick could save you up to $350 a year.
  • Clean your heat pump filters. It helps your unit run more efficiently and could save you up to $50 a year.
  • Use LED bulbs. They're much more efficient and could save you up to $90 a year.
  • Wash your clothes in cold water. This easy switch can save you up to $50 a year.
  • Close your curtains in the evenings. Trap in the day's heat by closing your curtains as the sun goes down. This can save you around $80-$90 a year.
  • Block draughts. Stop cold air from sneaking in under doors and around windows. This easy fix can save you up to $100 a year.

Use draught stoppers to prevent cold air getting in.

Finding things tough? There’s help available

We know that for some whānau, keeping up with power bills over winter can be a real struggle.

If you're worried about your energy costs, please know you're not alone and there's support available. From home visits and grants to trusted, local advice, help is out there. Find out more about energy hardship support on the Gen Less website.

Check if you can get a grant for a warmer home

A well-insulated home with efficient heating is cheaper to run in the long term. If you're a homeowner-occupier, you might be able to get a grant to help with the cost of ceiling and underfloor insulation and a heat pump.

These grants are part of the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme from EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority). See if you’re eligible for a grant by visiting the Warmer Kiwi Homes website.
