Renowned Scottish artist Peter Graham (1838-1921) RA, RSA was celebrated for his landscape paintings. They tended to be dramatic scenes of waves crashing on the coast or moody weathered pastoral scenes but he also produced some fantastic etchings of city life. This work entitled St. Bride’s Church Spire captures Victorian London but in a way that feels quite modern to me, with its sketch-like immediacy. The etching itself is in excellent condition and the mount has a little foxing consistent with age that only adds to its appeal for me. If it bothers you it could be easily and cheaply replaced as the frame is still in good order.
